There have been a lot of people saying "I'm only going to vote for mayor, I don't like anyone on the ballot for council," or "I am only going to vote for [this person] for council, they're the best candidate," and while we are all given the right to our own opinions?
Here are three reasons why you should vote for a total of six (6) members of Town Council each and every time there is a town election:
1) Unlike various other counties, cities and towns, the Council of the Town of Jarratt, Virginia, does not have a staggered election cycle. Each election year, all six (6) seats are up for grabs to the six (6) people who have the most votes.
2) The current election cycle lasts two (2) years. If you want the six (6) members of council to remain in power, they will end up with their same position in the next two (2) year session if people do not vote for a total of six (6) people that they feel will do right by the people, for the people.
3) If voters do not like the people who are currently in power because they are not doing right by the people they are supposed to help and listen to on a regular basis, not voting for six (6) members of Council in total to replace them allows the people who are currently in power to remain in power.
You have the right to not vote for any members of Council. You have the right to only vote for one (1), or even five (5), person/s for Council -- but every ballot that has less than six (6) positions filled gives more wiggle room for those who are unwanted to maintain "majority rule."
If you do not like how someone handles government, you should never give them the satisfaction of wiggle room in an election. The people control a candidate's fate, not the candidates themselves.
